Prime Minister Andrew Holness and other offiials on a tour of the Spring Village bridge last year.
Physical works for the bridge replacement project started this week and is scheduled for completion by year-end.
The bridge was closed in 2023 after it was discovered that the more than a century-old structure was severely compromised.
Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says that as part of the project the old structure will be removed to facilitate the construction of a pre-stressed girder concrete bridge. He says the works will also include site clearance, the driving of piles to support the bridge frame, river training and protective works, the construction of approaches, along with road signs and road markings.
The new structure, valued at approximately $250 million, will also have sidewalks for pedestrians, concrete wing walls and parapet walls.
Since its closure persons have been travelling through Nightingale Grove Farms, otherwise called Five Acres, an alternative route that is longer and more expensive for commuters.
The bridge serves as a major connector for persons traveling from Gutters to the community of Spring Village, the home of the Best Dressed Chicken factory, and other northern areas such as Dover, Point Hill and all roads leading off.
Best Dressed Chicken’s parent company, the Jamaica Broilers Group has committed $50 million towards the project.
